On the edge of the Ohio frontier, young George Leland and his sister Rosalind inherit a prosperous homestead left by their pioneering parents. Their life of relative peace—rich soil, abundant rivers, and a loyal servant named Zeb—has been sustained by the goodwill they once extended to nearby Native peoples. Yet rumors of increasing raids and sightings of hostile warriors begin to fray that fragile security.
When seasoned frontiersman Roland Leslie returns with unsettling news of recent massacres upriver, George and Rosalind confront a stark choice: trust the uneasy peace they have known or brace for a looming conflict. As tension mounts, the siblings must decide whether to defend their home, seek refuge in the surrounding woods, or venture into unknown danger. Their resolve will be tested by the harsh realities of frontier life, where loyalty, courage, and survival hang in a delicate balance.

Best known for fast-moving adventure stories for young readers, this prolific 19th-century American writer helped shape the dime novel era. He also wrote history, biography, and school texts, showing a much broader range than his frontier tales might suggest.
