Walter, a modest Swiss drover, awakens in a dazzling Parisian apartment, bewildered by silk curtains, polished mirrors and sumptuous furnishings. After a brief breakfast with his new benefactors, he learns that his money has been safely forwarded home and that a wealthy young Parisian, Mr. Lafond, needs a trustworthy attendant. Seeing a chance to secure his father's future, Walter accepts the offer, leaving his quiet mountain life for the glittering yet unfamiliar world of the French capital.
In his new position, Walter quickly becomes a favorite of his employer, witnessing the lavish but reckless habits of the privileged youth. Nights filled with gambling and indulgence begin to take a toll on Lafond’s health, and Walter finds himself torn between admiration for his patron’s generosity and concern for his self‑destructive ways. The story follows Walter’s growing sense of responsibility as he navigates loyalty, cultural differences, and the moral complexities of serving a man who lives on the edge of excess.
