In a bustling village that feels both timeless and absurd, a quarrelsome wife named Nille wrestles with her indolent husband, Jeppe, who can hardly be roused from sleep. Their heated exchange over chores, taxes, and a mischievous “Master Erik” lurking in the shadows sets the stage for a raucous comedy of errors. Nille’s sharp tongue and relentless demands clash with Jeppe’s lazy excuses, while the local baron, a scheming secretary, and a bewildered magistrate hover in the background, ready to add their own brand of bureaucratic chaos.
The play’s first act spirals into a series of farcical tasks—fetching green soap, hunting for missing garments, and confronting a phantom pest that seems to dance on Jeppe’s back. As the village gossip swirls, Jeppe’s desperate attempts to keep his dignity—and his trousers—intact reveal a man caught between stubborn pride and the crushing weight of rural expectations. The humor is sharp, the dialogue lively, and the everyday struggles of this transformed peasant promise plenty of laughs and relatable moments for listeners.
