Description

The narrator, a seasoned bibliophile and document specialist, receives a courteous invitation from a reclusive Northumbrian gentleman who has inherited a sprawling, centuries‑old manor. The house, Ravensdene Court, houses thousands of ancient volumes, pamphlets and a remarkable coin collection, all haphazardly piled in a wing that resembles a museum in disarray. Intrigued by the promise of untangling the chaos and uncovering hidden treasures, he accepts the commission and sets out from London in early March.

Arriving on the rugged coast, he meets the enigmatic owner, his quiet nineteen‑year‑old niece, and a flamboyant numismatist named Septimus Cazalette. With his luggage sent ahead, he decides to walk the nine‑mile coastal path to the estate, a choice that soon plunges him into an uncanny series of events—a sudden storm, an abandoned cottage, and a cryptic clue left in the sand. The episode hints at deeper secrets buried within the manor’s tangled archives.
