Al Pendray awakens alone amid the twisted corridors of a crippled star‑ship, his flashlight casting an eerie green glow on walls that feel more like an underwater tunnel than a metallic hull. With a sprained ankle and the ship’s artificial gravity dead, he must relearn how to move in weightless space, using walls and careful braking to stay upright. Every step is a reminder that the once‑mighty vessel is now a maze of ruin, and the only sound is his own breathing echoing through the void.

In a dimly lit airlock he discovers a small lifeboat, its lights still humming, but a simple tag warns of ongoing repairs. Inside, the shielding on the atomic motors has been stripped away, meaning the craft can power home—but the exposed radiation would be lethal within hours. Faced with a choice between a certain death and a perilous, perhaps impossible, return, Pendray must decide what truly defines a man when necessity and desire clash.
