A Little Union Scout

A young woman fresh from college spends a lazy afternoon rummaging through her family’s attic, hunting for relics of a bygone era. When she uncovers an old scrapbook filled with newspaper clippings about a daring Union scout named Captain Frank Leroy, her curiosity is sparked. The contrasting headlines—praise from Northern papers and harsh criticism from Southern ones—hint at a complex legacy that her own father, a former Confederate soldier, may have guarded for a reason.

The narrative then shifts to the narrator’s own memories of the war, recalling friendships forged at college and the sudden call to service in 1861. Together with a few comrades, they travel westward, meet General Maury, and experience the chaotic early days of the conflict, from clerical duties in Mobile to restless skirmishes near Corinth. Their path soon leads them into the orbit of the legendary General Forrest, setting the stage for a series of daring encounters that will test loyalty, bravery, and the thin line between heroism and infamy.
