Description

In the shadow of the newly forged coal mines, a modest community of miner families carves out lives amid soot‑blackened valleys and tidy rows of brick houses. The Morels, newly arrived in the cramped yet respectable “Bottoms,” face the harsh realities of cramped kitchens opening onto ash‑filled alleys, while trying to keep a household together. Their mother, Mrs. Morel, is a small but determined woman, already eight years into a marriage that ties her to the relentless rhythm of the pits.

The story follows the everyday struggles and quiet hopes of this working‑class family, especially through the eyes of their children, who are drawn to the local fair and the promise of a brief escape. As the community gathers for celebrations, the Morels must navigate the fragile balance between duty, desire, and the looming pressures of a world reshaped by industry. The novel captures the intense bonds of love and the tug of ambition that shape each character’s path.

D. H. (David Herbert) Lawrence

1885–1930

Best known for novels that tested the limits of what fiction could say about love, desire, and modern life, this English writer remains one of the boldest voices of the early 20th century. His work combines emotional intensity with sharp observations about class, industry, and human relationships.
