Arthur Gilman
1837–1909
A writer, educator, and reform-minded organizer in 19th-century Cambridge, he is best remembered for helping create what became Radcliffe College. Alongside his books on history and literature, he worked to expand serious educational opportunities for women.

An Oxford scholar and prolific Victorian historian, he helped bring the ancient world to English readers through widely read histories and translations. His work ranged from Herodotus and the empires of the ancient Near East to Bible history and the early church.
