A shy young clerk named Bert finds himself caught between the expectations of his family and the whims of his beloved, Florrie. When the well‑meaning but blunt Mr. Culpepper offers unsolicited advice, Bert is urged to swap his modest manners for a louder, more confident façade—ale, cigarettes, and a dash of bravado. The stakes feel high: Florrie's inheritance hinges on a marriage approved by her uncle, and any misstep could cost her dearly.
Taking his mentor's counsel to heart, Bert experiments with the rougher habits of his peers, stumbling through awkward jokes and uneasy drinking sessions at the local tavern. Each attempt to appear “manly” brings comic mishaps and a growing awareness that his true self may not fit the prescribed script. As the birthday celebration looms, he must decide whether to keep up the act or find a quieter, more genuine path to win Florrie's heart.

Best remembered for the chilling classic "The Monkey's Paw," this English writer also built a huge readership with witty, sharply observed tales of dockworkers, sailors, and everyday London life. His stories mix humor and unease in a way that still feels vivid more than a century later.
