Best known for writing for children and schools, this 19th-century French author also had a long, lively friendship with Honoré de Balzac. Her life joined literature, education, and the intellectual world of her time.

by Zulma Carraud
Born Estelle Zulma Tourangin-Courant in Issoudun on March 24, 1796, Zulma Carraud became a French writer remembered especially for children's books and educational texts. Among the works most often linked with her are La Petite Jeanne ou le devoir and Maurice ou le travail.
She is also widely noted for her close friendship and correspondence with Honoré de Balzac. That connection has helped keep her name alive, but it should not overshadow her own work as a writer with a clear interest in education and moral instruction.
Carraud died in Paris on April 24, 1889. Today she is remembered both as an author in her own right and as a thoughtful presence in the literary circles around Balzac.
