About the author

Born in 192, Cao Zhi was the son of the warlord Cao Cao and lived during the turbulent transition from the late Eastern Han dynasty to the Three Kingdoms period. He was known not only as a prince of Cao Wei but also as one of the most admired poets of his age.

Traditional accounts often present him as a remarkably quick and talented writer, and later generations celebrated him as a major voice of Jian'an poetry. His poems are remembered for their clarity, strong emotion, and reflections on ambition, loss, friendship, and the uncertainty of political life.

Cao Zhi died in 232. Even centuries later, he is still read as one of early medieval China's great literary figures, valued both for the beauty of his language and for the human feeling that runs through his work.
