About the author

Born as Zeng Shen and better known as Zengzi, he lived during the Eastern Zhou period and studied under Confucius. Later tradition places him among the most respected early Confucian thinkers, and he was eventually honored as one of the Four Sages of Confucianism.

He is most often associated with the Confucian ideals of moral discipline, reverence within family life, and careful daily self-examination. Traditional accounts also connect him with the Great Learning, a text that became highly influential in later Confucian education.

Zengzi's importance reaches beyond his own lifetime because he is said to have taught Zisi, the grandson of Confucius, helping carry the tradition forward into later generations. That place in the lineage made him a lasting bridge between Confucius and the thinkers who shaped classical Confucianism afterward.
