About the author

Born on January 5, 1779, in New Jersey, Zebulon Pike followed his father into the U.S. Army and built his reputation on frontier service. In the first years of the 1800s, he was chosen to lead major expeditions that took him up the upper Mississippi River and later across the Great Plains and into the Rocky Mountain region.

Those travels made him one of the best-known American explorers of his era. During his southwestern expedition, he and his party crossed into Spanish-held territory and were detained before eventually being returned, an episode that added intrigue and controversy to his career. The mountain later named Pikes Peak kept his name in public memory, even though he never reached its summit.

Pike continued his military career and rose through the ranks during the War of 1812. He was killed on April 27, 1813, during the American attack on York in Upper Canada, now Toronto, and was remembered both as a soldier and as a key figure in the young nation’s push to understand and claim its western lands.
