About the author
Born in Viipuri on March 6, 1904, Yrjö Sakari Rauanheimo was a Finnish journalist and writer. Before settling into newspaper and magazine work, he graduated from school in 1921 and spent time sailing at sea, reportedly traveling as far as around the world.
That maritime experience shaped his writing. He is especially associated with sea stories and adventure fiction, including Meri kertoo, and his work has been noted for convincing detail drawn from real shipboard life. Alongside his literary work, he also worked in journalism in Finland and in the United States.
Rauanheimo died in Helsinki on November 29, 1949, at just 45 years old. Though his life was short, his writing remains of interest for readers who enjoy classic Finnish storytelling rooted in travel, seafaring, and firsthand experience.
