About the author

Born in Viipuri on March 6, 1904, Yrjö Sakari Rauanheimo was a Finnish journalist and author. He was born into the Rauanheimo family and was originally surnamed Järnefelt until 1906.

Before settling into newspaper work, he graduated from school in 1921 and spent time at sea, reportedly sailing widely, even around the world. That first-hand knowledge gave his sea writing an easy sense of reality and movement, and helps explain why maritime themes stand out so strongly in his work.

Rauanheimo wrote fiction as well as sea-related narratives, and his books include titles such as Meri kertoo and Jäätynyt mies. He died in Helsinki on November 29, 1949, still young, but left behind a body of writing remembered for its adventure, atmosphere, and connection to the seafaring world.
