Born in 776 during the Tang dynasty, Bai Xingjian was a Chinese novelist, poet, and short story writer. He was the younger brother of the celebrated poet Bai Juyi, and later served as an official as well as a man of letters.
He is best known for Li Wa Zhuan (The Story of Li Wa), a tale that became one of the notable prose romances of classical Chinese literature. His writing is remembered for its polished style and for the way it blends emotional feeling with careful observation of social life.
