Worthington George Smith

1835–1917

A lively Victorian all-rounder, he moved from architectural drawing into illustration, archaeology, and the close study of fungi and plant diseases. His work blends a sharp eye for detail with the curiosity of a naturalist.

About the author

Born in London in 1835, Worthington George Smith first trained as an architect before building a wider career as an illustrator and draughtsman. Over time he became known not just for art, but for an unusually broad range of interests, including archaeology, antiquarian research, and natural history.

He is especially remembered for his work as a mycologist and plant pathologist. Smith studied and illustrated fungi with great care, particularly species affecting crops, and his books and drawings helped make complex subjects easier to understand for general readers as well as specialists.

That mix of scientist, artist, and field observer gives his writing a distinctive appeal. Whether he was describing mushrooms, old tools, or traces of prehistoric life, he brought the same patient attention to what could be seen directly and carefully recorded.
