Born in Berlin in 1909, he became one of the twentieth century's notable interpreters of Chinese history and society. Trained in sinology, anthropology, and sociology, he built a reputation for bringing together literature, folklore, religion, and everyday life to show a fuller picture of China.
His career took him across several countries, including years teaching in Turkey before he later joined the University of California, Berkeley. Alongside academic studies, he wrote books for wider audiences as well, helping non-specialist readers discover Chinese civilization in a clear and approachable way.
He is especially remembered for work on Chinese folklore, local cultures, and social history, as well as for broad surveys such as A History of China. He died in 1989, leaving behind a body of writing valued both by scholars and by curious general readers.
