1866–1935
An American historian and Episcopal clergyman, he wrote clearly about church history, Christian government, and major figures in world history. His work reflects both scholarly training and years spent teaching and preaching.
Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, on June 17, 1866, Wilson Lloyd Bevan built a career that mixed scholarship, ministry, and teaching. He studied at Johns Hopkins University, earned a master's degree from Columbia University, and completed a PhD at the University of Munich.
Bevan was an Episcopal priest and educator as well as a writer. He served in academic and church roles, including work at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and he became known for books such as Church History, Mediaeval and Modern and Gospel and Government: The Development of the Christian State.
His writing often brought big historical and religious subjects to general readers in a direct, organized way. He died on April 8, 1935, leaving behind a body of work shaped by both historical research and a lifelong engagement with Christian thought.
