About the author

Born in Findlay, Ohio, in 1845, he served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and received the Medal of Honor for bravery at the Battle of Stones River. After the war, he built a varied career as a journalist, editor, and author, moving from military service into public writing.

He worked on newspapers and magazines and wrote both nonfiction and fiction. His published books include works connected to Civil War history as well as historical novels, showing a lasting interest in dramatic events and the people shaped by them.

He died in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1911. Remembered both as a decorated veteran and a man of letters, he left behind a body of writing rooted in experience, curiosity, and a strong feel for American history.
