About the author

Born in Middlebury, Vermont, on December 31, 1832, William Young Warren Ripley is best known as a Union Army officer who served with the 1st United States Sharpshooters during the Civil War. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill in 1862 and later received the Medal of Honor for his actions there.

Ripley also left behind an important historical record as an author. His best-known book, Vermont Riflemen in the War for the Union, 1861–1865: A History of Company F, First United States Sharpshooters, draws on his own military experience and focuses on the service of Vermont soldiers during the war.

He died on December 16, 1905. Today, his work remains of interest to readers who enjoy Civil War history, memoir, and detailed regimental storytelling from someone who was there.
