Born in 1832, he served in the American Civil War with the 1st United States Sharpshooters and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. His military service became the foundation of the work he is best known for.
His main book, Vermont Riflemen in the War for the Union, 1861 to 1865: A History of Company F, First United States Sharpshooters, was published in 1883. It offers a detailed account of Company F and stands out as a firsthand record of the war from an officer who took part in it.
