About the author

Born in 1784, he served in the British Army during the Napoleonic era and later became a senior military and diplomatic figure. He is most closely associated with the Peninsular War, where his experiences gave him material for the letters and observations that readers still return to today.

Warre’s best-known book, Letters from the Peninsula, 1808–1812, stands out for its direct, eyewitness account of the war. His writing combines military detail with a human sense of place, making it appealing both to history readers and to anyone curious about everyday life during the conflict.

He died in 1853. Although he was not chiefly known as a literary figure, his surviving writings have earned a lasting place in historical literature because they bring a major European war down to the level of personal experience.
