About the author

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 8, 1824, he was precocious from the start, studying medicine and law before working as a journalist. That mix of intellect, ambition, and nerve helped shape the bold public image that followed him west to California in the early 1850s.

He became famous for leading private military expeditions, first in Baja California and Sonora and then in Nicaragua. In 1856 he managed to make himself president of Nicaragua, but his rule was short-lived, and his campaigns drew fierce resistance across Central America.

His story ended dramatically in Honduras, where he was executed by firing squad on September 12, 1860, at just 36 years old. Remembered as an adventurer, filibuster, and deeply controversial political figure, he remains a striking example of the expansionist dreams and violence of his era.
