About the author

Born in Indiana in 1869, he studied at Harvard, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees and began building his literary reputation. He later taught English at Harvard and at the University of Chicago, while writing poetry and plays that drew attention for their dignity, ambition, and emotional intensity.

His poetry was admired for its elevated language and reflective, often spiritual mood, and critics have described his work as linking nineteenth-century traditions with newer twentieth-century directions. Alongside his verse, he wrote for the theater, and The Great Divide became his best-known dramatic success.

His career was cut short when he died in Colorado Springs in 1910. Because of that early death, he is often remembered as a writer of striking promise whose body of work feels smaller than his talent suggested.
