About the author

Born in Pomfret, Connecticut, in 1835, Louise Chandler Moulton began publishing early and brought out her first book while still very young. She went on to become known for poetry, short fiction, children's books, travel writing, and literary criticism, building a long and varied career.

She married Boston publisher and journalist William U. Moulton in 1855; he died in 1898. Her early work appeared in The True Flag, and over time she became a familiar presence in major magazines as well as in literary circles in Boston and London.

Beyond her own books, she was remembered as a generous literary hostess and supporter of other writers. That mix of creative work, criticism, and personal influence helped make her an admired figure in American literary life.
