About the author

Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, in 1938, he worked in many jobs before turning seriously to writing, including teaching, acting, and even serving as mayor of Ohakune. That varied life experience helped shape fiction that feels lively, grounded, and full of personality.

He became one of New Zealand’s best-known writers for children and young adults, publishing more than 30 novels. His work earned major recognition, including the Esther Glen Medal, the Aim Children’s Book Award, the Margaret Mahy Medal, and Italy’s Premio Andersen award for best children’s book of the year.

He died in 2015, but his stories continue to stand out for their energy, wit, and emotional honesty. Readers who like coming-of-age fiction with memorable characters and a strong sense of place may find a lot to enjoy in his work.
