About the author

Born in Paisley in 1863, he studied at the University of Glasgow, where he earned distinction in philosophy before going on to complete legal training and a doctorate. He became a lecturer in constitutional law and history at Glasgow and later held the Chair of Conveyancing there from 1916 until 1927.

His best-known book, Magna Carta: A Commentary on the Great Charter of King John with an Historical Introduction, helped establish his reputation as a leading interpreter of constitutional history. He also wrote on political science, democracy, individual liberty, and parliamentary reform, bringing a scholarly but readable approach to big public questions.
