About the author

Born in London in 1792, he was educated at Westminster School and trained as a solicitor, building a professional life in law while also pursuing a deep interest in antiquarian research. He later became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and was associated with the Percy Society, reflecting his place in the world of 19th-century literary and historical scholarship.

He is most closely linked with Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern (1833), the collection that made his name last. The book helped preserve and popularize older seasonal songs, and it is often credited with bringing several now-famous English carols into print during the Victorian revival of Christmas traditions.

Sandys died in London on February 18, 1874. Though not a household name today, he remains an important figure for readers interested in folklore, early popular song, and the history of Christmas celebrations in Britain.
