About the author

Born in Pennsylvania in 1802, William Swan Plumer became a prominent Presbyterian minister, theologian, and religious author in the United States. He studied at Washington College in Virginia and later at Princeton Theological Seminary, and went on to serve churches as a pastor while building a reputation as a careful, plainspoken expositor of Christian doctrine.

Plumer wrote widely on theology, Bible interpretation, and pastoral life. He is especially remembered for works on the Psalms and Romans, along with practical devotional writing that aimed to be useful rather than academic for its own sake. His style was direct and earnest, which helped his books remain valued among readers interested in historic Presbyterian and Reformed teaching.

Later in life, he also taught theology, including service connected with Columbia Theological Seminary. He died in 1880, leaving behind a large body of sermons, commentaries, and doctrinal works that continued to be reprinted long after his lifetime.
