About the author

Born in Pennsylvania in 1802, William Swan Plumer became an influential American Presbyterian minister, teacher, and author. He studied at Washington College and Princeton Theological Seminary, then went on to serve churches in Virginia and elsewhere during a long ministry that made him a prominent voice in Presbyterian life.

Plumer was known not only as a preacher and church leader, but also as a remarkably productive writer. He published Bible commentaries, theological works, and devotional books, aiming to make serious Christian teaching clear and useful for ordinary readers as well as ministers.

He died in 1880, but his work continued to circulate long afterward. Readers still turn to him for thoughtful, Bible-centered writing that is both doctrinally careful and deeply practical.
