About the author

Born in 1858 and dying in 1927, William S. Thomas was an American outdoorsman and travel writer whose surviving books center on hunting, exploration, and life in remote landscapes.

His best-known works include Hunting Big Game with Gun and with Kodak (published in 1906) and Trails and Tramps in Alaska and Newfoundland. Both were issued by G. P. Putnam's Sons, and both draw on his own experiences in the field. Contemporary catalog records note that these books were illustrated with his original photographs, which helps explain their lively, firsthand quality.

What stands out today is the blend of adventure narrative and documentary detail. Thomas wrote at a time when readers were fascinated by wilderness travel, and his books preserve that era's mix of personal storytelling, observation, and expedition photography.
