About the author

Born in Warwickshire, England, in 1755, William Russell Birch trained as a miniaturist and enamel painter before building a reputation as an engraver and designer. He exhibited in Britain and earned recognition for his skill in enamel work before moving to Philadelphia in 1794.

In America, he became especially known for The City of Philadelphia in the Year 1800, a landmark series of prints made with help from his son Thomas Birch. These views are valued today not just as works of art, but also as vivid records of the look and atmosphere of the early republic.

Birch continued to produce landscapes and topographical scenes, including views of the countryside and notable American sites. He died in Philadelphia in 1834, and his work remains important for the way it blends careful observation, technical craft, and a strong sense of place.
