About the author

Born in 1859, William Roscoe Thayer was an American historian, biographer, and editor whose career was closely tied to Harvard. He graduated from Harvard College in 1881, later served for many years as editor of the Harvard Graduates' Magazine, and was also an overseer of the university.

He became especially known for literary history and biography rather than narrow academic writing. Among his best-known works are The Dawn of Italian Independence, The Life and Times of Cavour, The Life and Letters of John Hay, and Theodore Roosevelt: An Intimate Biography. His writing on Italian unification earned him recognition from Italy, and his work was praised for combining scholarship with an engaging style.

Thayer also played a public role in the historical profession, serving as president of the American Historical Association in 1918–1919. He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on September 7, 1923, leaving behind a body of work that aimed to make history readable, lively, and personal.
