About the author

Born in Boston on January 16, 1859, William Roscoe Thayer was an American author, editor, and historian with a strong interest in Italy and European politics. He studied at Harvard, graduating in 1881 in the same class as Theodore Roosevelt, and went on to build a literary career that mixed historical writing with essays, biography, and criticism.

Thayer is especially remembered for books on Italian subjects, including works on Cavour and Italy in the modern era, as well as for his writing on Theodore Roosevelt. His style helped make serious history readable for general audiences, and his work appeared in major literary magazines including The Atlantic.

He was also active in the historical profession, serving as president of the American Historical Association during 1918 and 1919. Thayer died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on September 7, 1923, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both literary grace and a deep curiosity about public life and history.
