About the author

Born in Southwark, London, on July 15, 1804, William Radcliff Birt built a reputation through patient observational work rather than through a formal academic post. He is remembered as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and as a 19th-century investigator of both astronomy and weather.

Birt worked with John Herschel on research into atmospheric waves, and he also devoted major effort to lunar studies, especially the changing appearance of features on the Moon. His published work included writing on storms and meteorology as well as astronomy, showing the wide range of his scientific interests.

He died in Leytonstone, London, on December 14, 1881. Although not a household name today, he left a lasting mark on lunar observation, and the Moon's crater Birt preserves that connection.
