About the author

Born around 1591 or 1592, William Pemble was an English theologian and author associated with Magdalen Hall, Oxford. He later served as a lecturer at St Aldate's in Oxford, where he built a reputation as a thoughtful and accessible preacher.

Pemble wrote on theology, Christian living, and the interpretation of Scripture. Readers have especially remembered him for the plain, instructive style of his religious works, which suited both students and ordinary believers.

He died in 1623, still a young man, but his writings remained in print after his death. That long afterlife in print suggests how strongly his work connected with readers in the religious world of early modern England.
