About the author

Born in Moffat, Scotland, in 1843, William Morison was educated at Moffat Academy, the University of Edinburgh, and the United Presbyterian College in Edinburgh. He went on to serve as a Presbyterian minister in several congregations before retiring from ministry in 1914.

Alongside his church work, he wrote nonfiction, especially biography and history. Sources consistently describe him as a writer and biographer, and his known books include Andrew Melville (published in the "Famous Scots" series), Johnston of Warriston, and Milton and Liberty.

Morison died in Edinburgh in 1937. Reliable source material about his life is fairly brief, but it presents him as a thoughtful minister-author whose books connected Scottish religious and historical subjects with ordinary readers.
