Born in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, William Morison (1843–1937) was educated at Moffat Academy, the University of Edinburgh, and the United Presbyterian College in Edinburgh. He went on to serve as a Presbyterian minister, and he is also remembered as a writer and biographer.

Alongside his church work, he wrote books that explored notable religious figures and movements, including lives of well-known Scottish church leaders. His writing is closely tied to ecclesiastical history, especially the Scottish Reformation and later Presbyterian tradition.
