About the author

Born in Llangefni, Anglesey, in 1866, William Lewis Jones was educated at Friars School, Bangor, and went on to Queens' College, Cambridge. He later returned to north Wales and built his career at University College of North Wales, Bangor, where he was appointed Assistant Lecturer in English in 1891 and became Professor in 1897.

Jones was known both as a teacher and as a man of letters. He wrote articles for learned journals and societies, edited Welsh literary collections including Caniadau Cymru and The Land of My Fathers, and published works such as King Arthur in History and Legend. He also served as University Librarian, reflecting the range of his influence in Bangor's academic life.

He died at Bangor on February 2, 1922. Remembered as a Welsh professor and author, he helped connect scholarship with a broader interest in Welsh literature, history, and national culture.
