About the author

Born in 1787 and dying on February 20, 1855, he was an English Anglican clergyman, missionary, and author. He is remembered as the first Anglican cleric to volunteer for overseas service with the Church Missionary Society, a step that made him an important early figure in Protestant missions.

His work took him to Malta and across parts of the Mediterranean, as well as to Ottoman Syria and Ottoman Palestine. Those experiences shaped the books for which he is now most often noted, including Christian Researches in the Mediterranean (1822) and Christian Researches in Syria and the Holy Land in 1823 (published in 1826). These works blend travel observation, religious purpose, and detailed accounts of the places and communities he encountered.

Later in life, he served as clerical secretary of the Church Missionary Society and then held parish posts in London and Clapham. No suitable verified portrait image could be confirmed from the sources reviewed, so a profile image is not included here.
