About the author

Born in Sale, Cheshire, William Johnson Galloway lived from 1868 to 1931. He was educated at Wellington College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and later became a partner in the engineering firm W & J Galloway & Sons in Manchester.

Galloway also had a public career in politics and the military. He served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Manchester South West from 1895 to 1906, and he was associated with the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry. Sources also describe him as a conductor and author, suggesting a life that reached well beyond business alone.

That mix of industry, public service, and artistic interest makes him an unusual and appealing figure from his era. Rather than fitting neatly into one role, he seems to have been one of those energetic Edwardian personalities who took part in many sides of public life at once.
