William Fleming

b. 1844

An Irish-born Catholic priest and historian, he wrote lively works on church history and saints, including a study arguing that St. Patrick was born at Boulogne-sur-Mer. His books reflect years of ministry in London as well as a deep interest in early Christian history.

About the author

Born in Ireland in 1844, William Fleming was educated at St. Edmund's, Ware, and ordained in 1870. He later served as curate of St. Mary's, Moorfields, from 1871 to 1885, then as rector of St. John's, Hackney, from 1885 to 1895, before returning in 1895 as rector of St. Mary's, Moorfields.

Alongside his church work, he wrote several historical and religious books. Confirmed titles include The True Church of the Bible, A Brief History of St. Mary's, Moorfields, and Boulogne-Sur-Mer: St. Patrick's Native Town, a 1907 book in which he explored the long-debated question of St. Patrick's birthplace.

His writing is rooted in Catholic history and devotional scholarship, with a clear interest in British and Irish religious traditions. I could confirm the outline of his education, clerical posts, and published works, but not a reliable death date from the sources reviewed here.
