About the author

Born in 1871 and educated at the University of New Brunswick and Columbia University, William Diller Matthew became one of the best-known vertebrate paleontologists of his era. He focused especially on fossil mammals and was widely respected for combining careful anatomy with big-picture ideas about evolution and prehistoric life.

Much of his career was spent at the American Museum of Natural History, where he worked on major fossil collections and produced influential studies. He later joined the University of California, continuing his research and teaching before his death in 1930.

Matthew is especially remembered for his work on the evolution of horses and other mammals, as well as for helping popularize paleontology through clear scientific writing. His books and papers gave both specialists and general readers a vivid sense of the deep history of life in North America.
