About the author

Born in China in 1845, William Canton grew up in Jamaica and France before building a literary career in Britain. He worked as a journalist and became editor of the Glasgow Weekly Herald, later writing widely as a poet, essayist, and author.

He is now best known for children's books, especially the Invisible Playmate series, which began in 1891 and was written for his daughter, Winifred Vida. Those books helped give his writing a lasting place with readers who enjoyed gentle fantasy and family-centered storytelling.

Canton also wrote poetry and religious works, including studies connected with the Bible, showing the wide range of his interests. He died in 1926, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both a journalist's curiosity and a storyteller's warmth.
