About the author

Born in Liverpool in 1841, William Boyd Carpenter was educated at the Royal Institution there and at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. He was ordained in the Church of England and built a reputation as an able preacher, teacher, and writer.

Carpenter became Bishop of Ripon in 1884, a post he held for many years, and he also served as a royal chaplain to Queen Victoria. Later he was Clerk of the Closet to Edward VII and George V, and in his final years he was a canon and sub-dean of Westminster. He died in 1918.

Alongside his church work, he published widely on religion and helped bring theological ideas to a broad readership. That mix of public service, accessible writing, and national prominence made him one of the better-known Anglican churchmen of his time.
