About the author

Born in 1782 at Deptford, Kent, William Bengo' Collyer was educated at the Leathersellers' Company's school in Lewisham and then studied at Homerton College. Remarkably young when he began, he took up ministry at Peckham around 1800 and was ordained soon afterward.

Collyer stayed with the Peckham congregation for the rest of his life, building a reputation as one of the better-known Nonconformist preachers of his day. Alongside his preaching, he wrote widely on religious subjects and is also remembered as a hymn writer.

He received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1808 and continued his ministry and writing career until his death in Peckham in 1854. His long pastorate and steady literary output made him a notable figure in early 19th-century English Congregational life.
