About the author

Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, on February 8, 1894, William Avery "Billy" Bishop served first with the Canadian cavalry before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. He was officially credited with 72 victories and became Canada's top ace of the war, earning major decorations including the Victoria Cross.

Bishop also wrote about aviation and his wartime experience. His books include Winged Warfare and Winged Peace, works that helped turn the new and dangerous world of military flying into vivid reading for a broad audience.

After the First World War, he remained a prominent public figure in Canadian aviation and later played an important role in recruiting for the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He died in Palm Beach, Florida, on September 11, 1956.
