About the author

Born in 1843, he was the son of James Edward Austen-Leigh, Jane Austen’s nephew and the author of A Memoir of Jane Austen. That family connection placed him close to the Austen legacy, and later he helped carry it forward for a new generation of readers.

He is best remembered as the co-author, with his nephew Richard Arthur Austen-Leigh, of Jane Austen: Her Life and Letters: A Family Record (1913). The book expanded on earlier family accounts and drew on additional letters and materials, making it an important early source for readers interested in Jane Austen’s life.

Outside the world of books, he served as Clerk of the Journals in the House of Lords. He died in 1921. No suitable confirmed portrait image of him was found from the sources reviewed, so no profile image is included.
