About the author

Born in Minnesota in 1865, William Ambrose Spicer became a Seventh-day Adventist while still young and began working in church institutions early in life. Over time he built a wide-ranging career as an editor, missionary organizer, and administrator, gaining firsthand experience that later informed much of his writing.

Spicer worked in several countries, including England and India, and became especially known for his role in the expanding global mission of the church. In 1922 he was elected president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, serving until 1930, and remained an influential voice in denominational publishing and historical reflection.

He also wrote books that looked back on the movement’s growth, including works on Adventist history and mission progress. For listeners interested in religious history, his writing offers the perspective of someone who witnessed—and helped guide—an important period of international expansion before his death in 1952.
