Born on May 15, 1932, William Alvin Clemens Jr. is an American paleontologist best known for his work on fossil mammals. He has focused especially on mammals from the Cretaceous and early Paleocene, helping scientists better understand mammal evolution and survival across one of the most dramatic turning points in Earth's history.

Clemens spent much of his academic career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was part of the Department of Paleontology and the UC Museum of Paleontology. He later became a professor emeritus in Integrative Biology, and he also served as director of the museum in the late 1980s.
