Born in 1878 and dead by 1909, Will Lillibridge had a remarkably brief life but left behind a memorable body of early Western fiction. He is closely associated with South Dakota, and contemporary historical accounts describe him as a dentist by day and a writer by night.
His best-known work is Ben Blair, which brought him national attention in the early 1900s. Readers also still find Where the Trail Divides, The Dominant Dollar, and A Breath of Prairie and Other Stories, all of which reflect his strong interest in frontier settings and prairie communities.
Lillibridge's fiction stands out for its feel for Plains life and for the way it mixes action, landscape, and social tension. Because he died so young, his career was cut short, but his books remain part of the long tradition of American frontier storytelling.
