About the author

Born in Albany, New York, in 1853, Will Hicok Low became an American painter, muralist, illustrator, and writer on art. He trained first with sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, then worked as an illustrator in New York before going to Paris to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran.

After returning to the United States, he built a reputation for figure painting and decorative work, especially murals and allegorical subjects. His career connected him with the broader American Renaissance, and his work appeared in major public and artistic settings.

Low was also a man of letters as well as a visual artist. He wrote art criticism and published memoirs, including A Chronicle of Friendships, which reflects his friendships and the cultural world he knew. He died in 1932.
