About the author

Born in 1858, Will C. Barnes spent much of his life in the American West and became closely tied to Arizona's frontier years. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and was recognized for bravery during the Battle of Fort Apache in 1881, an event that later became one of the notable parts of his life story.

After his military service, he worked as a rancher and remained deeply interested in the land, wildlife, and history of the Southwest. That practical experience shaped his writing and helped give it the sense of direct knowledge that readers still value.

Barnes went on to write about western life and Arizona history, becoming known as an author and historian who helped record a rapidly changing region. He died in 1936, leaving behind work that remains useful to readers interested in the people and places of the old Southwest.
