About the author

Born in Vehlefanz near Kremmen in 1861, Wilhelm Herzberg studied chemistry at the Berlin Gewerbe-Akademie and also attended university lectures in organic chemistry, physics, and botany. After further work in Berlin and Tübingen, he became associated with paper testing and helped establish a paper-testing department at the Gewerbe-Akademie's experimental institute.

Herzberg went on to become a recognized specialist in paper analysis. Reference works describe him as a paper examiner and paper expert, and note that his later work drew on chemical and microscopic methods. His writing belongs to the world of applied science and industry, where careful observation and technical precision mattered most.

The available biographical records are limited, and even his year of death is not consistently given in the sources I found. Deutsche Biographie records him as born on February 26, 1861, and as still living after 1936, so the often-cited 1945 death year should be treated with caution unless confirmed by stronger evidence.
